Challenger Buddy Wants More!!!

Last fall, WMLL entered into uncharted waters when it began a      Challenger Division as part of its Fall Ball Little League program.  The Challenger Division accommodates children with disabilities and has been a part of Little League Baseball since the 1980's.  The challenge for WMLL was finding field time for this new league.  But with the advent of the Fall Ball program, field time became available for the addition of Challenger games each week and a new league was born.

A key part of the program, in addition to our great and spirited Challenger players, is the "buddy" system.  Every Challenger player gets a buddy (usually a regular season WMLL player) to assist them as needed during the game.  One of these buddies during our inaugural 2009 season was Danny Zimmerman, who was paired with player Katy Goldschmidt.  Recently, we received an email from Danny's mom, as follows...............

"My son, Danny, was a volunteer last fall for the Challenger League and formed a lasting friendship with the young girl with whom he was paired, Katy Goldschmidt.  In fact, he enjoyed the experience so much that he is now considering majoring in Special Education in college.  The reason I’m writing is to inquire whether Danny will be able to participate as a volunteer again this fall...If so, we were wondering if there are any opportunities for Danny to take on a more active role in the program.  For example, perhaps he could help train the 2010 buddy volunteers or something along those lines.  Please let us know if there is some way that he might be of assistance to you as you develop the program."

WOW.........What a great email.  We speak quite often about the role sports play in forming lifetime memories, friendships and teaching life lessons.  To think that this small experience as a West Madison Little League Challenger buddy could have such an impact on this young man's life is awesome.  That he wants to give back to the program and our Challenger kids is even more awesome.  That he is thinking about making special education his career is simply inspiring.

Way to go Danny; we're really proud of you.  And to Katy too, for having such great enthusiasm and courage.  And thanks to all the other Challenger buddies who volunteered their time and talents last fall to make our inaugural season such a great success.  We hope to see you all back for Challenger 2010 in September...and hopefully with double the number of players.  SPREAD THE WORD!!!

WMLL Suffers Loss of Young Ballplayer

Jesse T. Alswager, a WMLL player on the 2009 Vitense Golfland team, passed away Feb 3.  Everyone at WMLL expresses our deepest sympathies to the Alswager family.  The obituary is below.  Jesse will be missed and there will be a real void at the ballpark this summer.

MADISON -- Jesse T. Alswager, age 13, Type 1 diabetes advocate, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, surrounded by his family and those who loved him, due to complications with Type 1 diabetes. He was born on Sept. 24, 1996, at Meriter Hospital in Madison, the son of Tom Alswager and Michelle Page Alswager. Jesse attended Huegel Elementary and currently was in the seventh grade at Toki Middle School. He was everyone's little brother or better known as "the Chill Kid." Jesse had a vibrant personality and an amazing smile. He had the ability to connect with anyone, some would call him "an old soul." Jesse's sisters and brother are going to miss his protective side, his peacekeeping ability and his complete love he had for his family. He was a confident young man, a talented musician and enjoyed playing at the High Noon Saloon. Jesse loved sports, baseball, skateboarding and snowboarding. He inspired a snowboarding camp for other kids with Type 1 diabetes. Jesse's advocacy brought him to Washington, D.C. to speak before Congress and was honored for his stem cell research advocacy by Governor Doyle during a State of the State Address.

He is survived by his parents, Tom Alswager and Michelle (Charles Brausen) Page Alswager; siblings, Sara, Samantha and Joey Alswager; paternal grandparents, Milton (Marie) Alswager and Marijane (Henry) Lesperance; maternal grandparents, Diane (Henry Nicolai) Krigsvold and Larry Page; paternal great-grandmother, Florence Alswager; aunts and uncles, Sue (Robert) Passow, Lori (Mike) Hammett and Daniel Merritt; cousins, Erin, Rachel, Mason and Andrew; and many other loving family and friends. Jesse was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Harold Alswager; great-grandparents, Violet and Bernard Beck, and Joseph and Elizabeth Liska; and grandfather, Dave Krigsvold.

Funeral services will be held at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5701 Raymond Road, Madison, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, with Chaplain Linda O'Leary presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to U. W. Credit Union, Jesse Alswager Memorial Fund.
